The breeding season 2009 was rather different for different species: some were quite successful, others were not. In the night from May 26th to 27th, high tide rose to 80 cm above mean high tide and large parts of salt marshes and beaches were flooded. Some Oystercatchers already had their clutches and most of them were lost. Most Redshank chicks had hatched already and some chicks drawned, but a good share survived.

Whilst Arctic Terns were just about to make their scrapes, Common Tern and Black-headed Gull had their clutches already. After the flooding, most Arctic Terns left the island. Common Tern and Black-headed Gull settled on other spots of the island, but they did not succeed. In June, cold and windy wheather again produced very high water levels and after two floodings at July 8th, clutches disappeared or were given up. The only tern that fledged was one Sandwich Tern which could be recognised in the middly of July. The cold and windy wheather in June was also bad for the colonial breeding Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull which had their chicks hatching just then. According to preliminary results, only 0.2 chicks / pair fledged. On the other hand, three species that colonized the island only in recent years were quite successful. The number of the breeding pairs of Spoonbill increased from 19 (2008) to 25 (2009), and their breeding success was high. 19 chicks of Barnacle Goose (5 breeding pairs) could be observed in the end of May already, and 4 Peregrine Falcon chicks fledged. Finally, 93 chicks of Shelduck could be observed feeding on the mudflats, whilst only 15 were observed in 2008. The following table gives the breeding pair numbers of all breeding bird species in 2009. In addition, the year is given, when the respective species was first recorded as a breeding bird on the island. However, not all species were breeding regularly. E. g., in the last years Sandwich Tern breeds only sporadically in very low numbers. |
